But Isabelle Antena has always been happily content to follow her muse either on her own or in group mode, and Bossa Super Nova -- her second collaboration with her daughter Penelope under the group name, following 2006's Toujours du Soleil -- is an easygoing treat of a release, another instance of the understated Brazilian pop grooves that Antena has always openly loved coming to the fore in her own inspired way. With further collaborative help musically and lyrically from a childhood friend of Isabelle's, Jean-Christophe Clair, Antena approached Bossa Super Nova in much the same way that Depeche Mode did with the previous year's Sounds of the Universe, intentionally taking technology and equipment from the band's earliest days to reexplore them for a different songwriting and arrangement approach. So instead of the heavily shrouded in reverb stylings of Camino del Sol, the early drum machines and keyboards here stand out much more crisply, while Antena's vocals similarly are of her as the accomplished and experienced performer rather than the young enthusiast out to see what might work. Songs like the insect-buzz tinged "Happy in My Garden" aim for the sweetly dreamy while "Straight to the Point," a giddy celebration of Serge Gainsbourg, becomes a frug-worthy acid rock confection suitable for the French legend in his late sixties days. The combination of science fiction bliss ("Amour Cosmique," "Une Francaise sur Mars") and reflective nostalgia ("Hollywood is Dead," a lament for lost stars of the past) makes for another excellent Antena album, once more. Their debut LP, Camino De Sol, followed in 1983. As the years passed, Antena delivered a number of singles and albums, chortling out a mix of electronic dalliance and exotic sounds.

If you’re a fan of Stereolab, Saint Etienne and Louis Phillipe – or even Stock Hausen & Walkman – you’ll know what this French act sound like. This third album can leave you cold at first, which, considering that this type of music is all about mood, is probably something of an indictment. Repeat plays, however, will allow the simple melodies and refrains to get under your skin like a warm Mediterranean sun. While the references to Pink Floyd and Atom Heart Mother (vocal, not musical) are a bit too contrived, Straight To The Point is a wonderful tribute (vocal and musical) to Serge Gainsbourg; it’s one to download. The rest of the album motors along just beneath the speed limit, though Leaving Las Vegas and Amour Cosmique get the heart racing.

LTMCD | 2554

Reviewed by Ian Shirley

Bossa Super Nova released on LTM (april 2010)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DlTnKy1mGB0/S6NrsDi3jkI/AAAAAAAAABM/wsTSRQHGByY/s400/cd+antena.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450318378658401858" />
ltmcd 2554

Antena | Bossa Super Nova

For this final volume in the Antena trilogy, Isabelle and Penelope decided to rummage through their attic and dust off some classic Roland equipment: the TR-808 drum machine, TB-303 Bass Line sequencer and SH09 monophonic synth, all of which were used on the classic debut Antena album Camino Del Sol in 1982. Adding to this retro theme, old schoolfriend Jean Christophe Clair was invited to contribute lyrics and ideas in remembrance of times past. Isabelle Antena then arranged and produced the songs with her husband Denis Moulin at their studio in the south of France, with Marco De Meersman adding extra percussion. Antena formed in the early 80s in Paris, recorded a handful of samba-scented pop vignettes for chic Belgian label, Les Disques Du Crepuscule, before key member Isabelle went solo and delivered a million sales from a dozen albums across the globe. She is worshipped in Japan, treated like royalty and generally given the freedom of any given city over there. In her home country she might be asked the time of day and in Britain, don't even go there - the lady is unheard of. Travesty.

Think back to Bebel Gilberto's short reign of world-music supremacy - 'Tanto Tempo' and all that. Antena have never had a sniff nor even an accolade about their timeless music and I still fail to see why, after several French-English albums, she or they never stamped their trainer-print onto the head of British music. Will this new and rather exquisite set of chilled-out electro-samba carols do them justice? What do you think?

'Bossa Nova Songs' is an experiment of sorts - the result of several hours of loft-rummages, heady rehearsals with analogue equipment and a deliberate nod to their debut album, 'Camino Del Sol'. It's rather tasty.

It would be churlish to single out one highlight here because there are so many. The opening foray into sand-swept lazy-days on a distant shore, 'Une Francaise Sur Mars', is a hip-wiggling triumph and the epitomy of Isabelle Antena's output and attitude. 'For No Reason' does the same, replete with cheeky little cosmic sparkles and Gallic twinkles that remind me of 'Sur Ton Ile', a single from the early 90s that ranks as one of her finest efforts. 'Happy In My Garden' is a highlight - a bossa-nova homage to the heights of summer only previously heard on 'Summer's Cauldron by XTC.

There is no low-point throughout the entire set, although 'Leaving Las Vegas' and 'A Night Of Infinity' breeze past gently, perhaps begging for the intervention of previous collaborators Thievery Corporation. Still good of course. But, as a whole, 'Bossa Nova Songs' welcomes the attentions of those who adore French-language subtlety, samba-fused trickery and summer-time hip-swinging anthems and who want something more than just 'bash-bash-bash' 'I-love-you' stereotypical pop-songs. 12 really worthy tracks out of 12 - when did you last get that from an album? Frankly, Lady GaGa can go sit on a sharpened-spike.

Elsewhere, 'Under Your Closed Eyelids' was used in the successful US TV series, 'Boondocks' while the short and sweet cover of the 60s urban-folk hit, 'Little Boxes' concludes the album with little in the way of fireworks, yet plenty in the way of staunch resilience and a latin-flavoured middle-finger to the world. Her best since 'Tous Mes Caprices'. Win. Go and buy it.
Paul Pledger

Interview ; Camino del sol by Jaime Sin

I spoke to Isabelle Antena via email in June of 2008. Here is the unpublished interview.

I first heard Antena's "Achilles" several years ago on (the now defunct) Tigersushi radio. It had such a strange and alluring sound, and I remember thinking "how is this song lush and minimal at the same time?". I immediately sought out more music and more information as to who Antena was. I found that Numero Group had re-issued the album Camino Del Sol with additional music, and I also managed to acquire the used vinyl for the original 5 song release of Camino, as well as a 7" of the song "Be Pop" (those were fruitful digging times). I was fascinated by the way it all sounded, playing upon many contradictions but working perfectly to my ears. It embraced extremes of cold and warm, at times thematically dark but presented in a joyous and sensual manner ... beautiful but dissonant, disconnected but intimate, romantic but chilly, etc ...... In much the same way I feel when I listen to the Raincoats, Antena's music is perfect in its imperfections, and there is a vein of youthful vitality and wonky innocence, and a genuine spirit of independence that runs through it.

Jaime Sin: I would like to ask you a little bit about what was going on at the time Antena got its start. It was the early 80's, it was Belgium, you were 3 kids making music. Can you tell me a little bit about what was happening around you at the time? Who were your inspirations and did you feel you had any contemporaries?

Isabelle Antena: We were from Paris Actually and I was playing guitar on the underground.
I had no connections with the music business but I had been putting bands together with friends as early as 8 years old:)
So, it was natural to ask my best friend and my boy friend if they wanted to help me be a band and record some songs.
With a very basic tape recorder, we recorded 8 songs and then decided to send them to record companies that had put their contact on the back of the LPs we had.
That's how we sent our "demo" tape to Crepuscule, Ralf records and ZE records.
We were listening to John Foxx 's Metamatic, Tuxedo Moon, The Residents, B 52's, as well as the old jazz records coming from my parents, Miles, Dizzy, Coltrane and of course my old time favourite Getz/Gilberto that my mother used to sing to me at bed time.
I have always been writing songs and so at that time, we never thought about the style we were going to have or if we were going to be part of a movement.
We had no drummer but a TR808, so that was the sound of our drummer.
We had no piano but a little electric pianotone, which gave also a particular sound.
When John Foxx said he wanted to produced 2 titles, in his studio The Garden, it was the first time we were going to a recording studio. This was with Gareth Jones and he teached me a lot about recording, production and sounds. I will thank him eternally for that.
Our contemporaries were young people like us, musically inexperimented but who wanted to express themself through the music. This was Cabaret Voltaire, 23 Skidoo, Durriti Column, Paul Haig and Tuxedo Moon.
We toured with those guys and had a great time, although doing a different style of music, we were accepted by them. We were French so it was natural that we would do "Chanson".
But Blaine Reininger played strings on our songs and I did vocals for Winston Tong or Paul Haig.It was a nice time of exchange. While recording in London, we even stayed at Genesis Porridge 's house (Throbbing Gristle) .... It was like a family business ....

JS: Can you tell me about where your lyrical inspirations came from? As I mentioned, "Achilles" was the first song I had heard by you, and I was intrigued by the one very simple lyric, "Achilles is an only child" repeated numerous times. To me, it suggested an interest in another side of the myth.

I also find "On the Boat" really interesting. It's such an upbeat song, yet the lyrics seem to be about alienation and a certain disconnection from your surroundings.

My French isn't great but there are a few songs pertaining to the tropics, holidays, as well as the cover of "Les Demoiselles de Rochefort" which is from a Jacques Demy film ... please feel free to talk about any of these songs as well as anything else you'd like to mention.

IA: The correct lyrics for Achilles are: Achilles is an unwanted child. Achilles is your son , recognize it...

I was so young , and so influenced by the New Yorkers like Lou Reed, Nico, Television where culture was to be spread (even the few we had) as jam on the bread. This was probably the "Warhol syndrom" :)
Actually you understood what was to understand in Achilles, the son of a goddess and a mortal man but the woman sight of it. (you know, woman's lib :)
The funny thing about that, is that, when I got first pregnant and that the "father" wasn't going to help me with the child, I called my son Achilles ...he's now a strong young man of 21 years old :)
There's always something desperate in Antena's lyrics
like Achilles is an unwanted child
On the boat is about taking drugs and see the boat sicking
Seaside weekend is a (pretty weird) love triangle
Camino del sol : is an enumeration of a holiday catalogue, but again, for desperate vacation
"Camino del sol, Hotel, Palm Beach, Air Florida
Station balneaire, Climat tropical etc ..."
This was the effect of the "Cold wave" associate to our willing to do samba, Bossa Nova type of music, which is usually associated with dance, sun and happiness.

(images via The Crepuscule and Factory Pages)

JS: "SEX IS HARD, ROMANCE IS HARDER"

I noticed this in the runout groove of the 1982 pressing of Camino Del Sol. Still true?

IA: whoooaaa you noticed this when I forgot about it.
It was just to have fun to print "secret" messages on vinyl.
Never thought I would have to speak about it 28 years after ...
Today is my 48th birthday and really, sex is pleasure and I perfectly managed to keep the romance going with the same man for the past 16 years. So things that can be hard when you're 20 actually get better with experiences :))

JS: You talk about how young you were when Antena was formed ... and it really shows! You managed to capture a feeling on those records that is so vital and uncontrived. To me, that sort of effervescence and honesty makes the music timeless. I'm curious to know how your music was received at the time. What are your impressions of the recurring interest in your early music over the past several years? Also please tell us what followed Antena, and what you've been working on recently!

IA: Now that there's new attention on Camino del sol , some people think we were overlooked but we didn't feel that way. We were part of a big indie family and had no idea of what the music business was like.
After recording Camino del sol , we were asked by Paul Haig to sing on Running away , by Winston Tong to sing on the 12 days of christmas ( for Crepuscule 's comp « The ghost of the Xmas past »). We were the little sisters of Cabaret Voltaire , Tuxedomoon or Throbbing Gristle but even to those people our bossa nova sound was extra terrestrial :).
Still we were accepted because of our indie (almost punk) minds and also cause we were cute and fresh:)
We did a video clip and toured a lot (including The danceteria in New York where we met Sonic Youth)...The end of the band really came when Chris Blackwell signed us on Island Records. By the time we recorded Be Pop , Pascale was gone and then , when Mercury rebought our contract from Island (they released a couple of singles) , Sylvain was still on the picture but not in the studio. When the recoding of En Cavale was completed , Mercury dropped me(as we were signed as a band but I was then on my own).
This is how I went back to Crepuscule records with the stolen tapes , and published them as Isabelle Antena (En Cavale means On the run)...but this is another story or the answer to your question : « What followed Antena ».
Seaside Weekend first appeared on En Cavale and hit the European charts for several weeks. But I was already recoding another album (Hoping For Love) with some old Belgian jazzmen (Johnny Dover , Johnny Hot) and it is Hoping for love and especially « Le Poisson Des Mers Du Sud « that led me to Japan , where during all the 90's I released almost an album a year , selling around 100 000 copies each time. So , I had no reason to try to sell my music elsewhere.
Then in 1999 , Eighteen Street Lounge released their first compilation and it opened with my song « Antena ».
This brought attention from dj's all over the world and I started to work with Buscemi in Belgium , while Yukihiro Fukutomi would cover my song « Playback »...
In 2006 Permanent Vacation came to me with the idea of Camino del sol 's remixes and I thought it was a good idea. The original tapes being lost , I had to re do most of the vocal tracks and re program the machines :)
So , this is what I think of the « recurring interest in my early music ».I've always try to work with a timeless spirit.
And free from the music business obligations (I'm the owner of all my rights recording or publishing). So , I am proud to be re discovered but not that surprised. Those re issues have been only possible because I had the rights to my songs. If it had stayed with Island or Mercury , it would probably still be stored in a box :)

My most recent work , apart from Versions Speciales (2007) , is French Riviera , a production by Yukihiro Fukutomi that made me work with Kyoto Jazz Massive , Jazztronik , Tatsuo Sunaga , Hajime Yoshizawa ... the cream of Japanese nu jazz scene.
I've also been lucky enough to write 2 tracks for the Boondocks (season 1 and 2) and this gave the desire to write more on images (anybody needs original music for their movie ?? ).In 2006 , I recorded a follow up to CDS named "Toujours Du Soleil" and the track Le Spinner was featured in Samsonite
advert campaign
I'm now (today:) recording an album with a big band and lots of horns , arranged 'a la Gil Evans 'to be released by the end of the year.( more infos on this in myspace. com/isabelleantena.)

Bahama Soul Club vs Isabelle Antena

Bahama Soul Club vs Isabelle Antena
Topic

Bahama Soul Club vs Isabelle Antena

I never learned to play an instrument, but if I could, I'd play either the percussion or the bass in a band like Bahama Soul Club . This German outfit plays a mix of bossanova, latin and jazz, with the sole purpose to make the audience move their asses. BHS uses various guestvocalists, like Pat Appleton from De-Phazz, but also the superlovely Isabelle Antena - one of the oz's (original zuchtmeisjes).

A Bout de Souffle is a very danceable song, referring ofcourse to the Godard movie, and features a lot sighing. With record-breaking numbers and exceptional guests Pure Pacha retains its title as the king of elegant and debauched partying. With a beautiful ‘extended family’ of like minded people at play every Friday night and always to the soundtrack of edgy house music, eclectic soul and hip hop - Pure Pacha is where it’s at.

What better way to mark this celebration of summer than with the next instalment of the Pure Pacha album mixed by Pete Tong and Sarah Main. An eclectic offering as Pete goes straight into things with Antena’s ‘Camino Del Sol’, a deeply hypnotic, bleep-laden track hotly followed by Pete’s cut of the summer ‘Every Heartbeat’ by Kleepup with vocals from Robyn. Producer de jour Mark Ronson also features with his smash ‘Stop Me’. Pete’s own production with Paul Harris and Jay P ‘Wonderland’ is on there - the best example of a tribute to all that is trippy and techy if ever there was one; it sits neatly alongside James Zabiela and Nic Fanciulli’s One+One offering ‘No Pressure’, with its beautifully crafted strings and atmospheric break down this makes for one unforgettable mix.

Sarah starts with an altogether funkier groove. Carl Kennedy’s ‘Ride the Storm’ and Nu Frequency ‘Love Sick’ tick all the boxes. Then dipping her toe into a more 4am sound with Magik Johnson’s ‘Eastern Lights’, before returning to her disco-fuelled Studio 54 fantasy in the form of Beginerz ‘Ape Stalking’. It draws to a close with a new track from the legendary Billie Ray Martin - ‘Undisco Me’. It does exactly what it says on the tin, an acid fringed track, it makes for one epic ending.

Confirmed guests for the 2007 Pure Pacha parties include Groove Armada, F*ck Me I’m Famous with David Guetta, Alex Neri and some special Il Muretto parties amongst others. Pete is excited to announce a much-anticipated date with the ultra talented Trentmoller on September 14th.

Pure Pacha is also renowned for its imaginative artwork and poster campaigns. This year the relationship with Christian Audigier is extended as Pete and Christian have created something very special around the theme of classic playing cards, poker and tattoos! This artwork has been continued to the CD.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Versions speciales / Soul seduction 's review

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_DlTnKy1mGB0/Rr1q2PT6CsI/AAAAAAAAAAU/PUOHvp0ZuGU/s320/R-995352-1182205072%5B1%5D.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5097347833308777154" />
Final release in the rework series for Antena's classic album "Camino Del Sol". NYC's Escort deliver pure summer sweetness in their disco version of "Seaside Weekend", Austria's DJ Enne turns "Achilles into a dirty jazz track and Pink Alert (Running Back) re-interpret "Joppo + Eno" in Tom Tom Club style.
Escort: These guys from NYC could be the next Scissor Sisters. They are fantastic musicians and love disco and know the score. And what can we say, their remix is a hit. Perfectly arranged summer sweetness - sing along music.
DJ Enne: Permvac buddy, DJ veteran and snowboard heroe Enne from Austria wanted to put hands on one of his all time classics "Achilles" a track he played everytime in his cosmic years back in the 80s. His version is cool jazz, deep and dirty, we love it.
Pink Alert: We liked Pink Alert so much, we adopted them, locked them in our basement with our record collection, equipment and some chickas and after a while they came out with this excellent extended re-edit of "Joppo + Eno" in a NYC loft style. All tracks are perfect summer tunes for all balearic and slow-mo disco heads out there.

Antena/Steve Yanko (The Boy on Permanent)

Disco From Ipanema

Permanent Vacation has had a busy year in 2007, with a number of solid releases from Kathy Diamond, an amazing 12-inch single from Ilya Santana, and the second Antena remix 12-inch. Now this relatively new, however upcoming label from Munich, Germany has just released a new 12-inch from Toronto native Steve Yanko, which includes a collaboration with Isabelle Antena to create a new dubbed out disco-house version of Antena's "The Boy From Ipanema", originally off the classic Camino Del Sol LP. On the flip side of this single entitled The Boy, Steve Yanko drops a solid disco party track in "Prostitute Pink". Both songs are amazing, and it's hard to say which track I enjoy more. Either way you look at it, Permanent Vacation has added another amazing single to their ever-growing classic collection. Man darf also weiter gespannt sein...
(3 Sterne)

Camino del sol/picadilly records review

In 1981, Isabelle Powaga, Pascale Moiroud and Sylvain Fasy decided to leave their sleepy hometown in the south of France for the City Of Lights. Taking their love for the mechanical electronics of Kraftwerk, the Latin sounds and rhythms of Jobim & Gilberto and a few suitcases, they formed the band Antena. Signing with Belgium's Les Disques Du Crepescule (which formed an alliance with Factory, creating Factory Benelux), in 1982 they travelled to London to record their version of "The Boy From Ipanema" with ex-Ultravox electronic pioneer John Foxx for a 7" release, tagged 'electro-samba' by a pre-Pet Shop Boys Neil Tennent in Smash Hits. However it was their own self-produced material of later twelves and mini album release "Camino Del Sol" that made the most impression. Definitely rougher in sound, this was the real electro-samba! The title track is a Balearic classic and was recently remixed for a special 12" by Todd Terje and Joakim.

Blog Français

jeudi, novembre 02, 2006

Voluptueux!
critiquesdisques.com

Antena - Camino Del Sol (Joakim / Todd Terje Remixes)
Isabelle Antena's album ''Camino Del Sol'' is an electro samba classic from 1983 (including tracks produced by John Foxx).

Pop News France/juillet 2006

ANTENA - Camino Del Sol
(LTM)

TOUJOURS DU SOLEIL/3 Hive

3hive.com

Isabelle Antena is a Parisian songbird whose bossa- and samba-inflected electro-Francopop is as glamorous as it is playful. And she's been making hip jingles for almost three decades. Antena released Camino del Sol 25 years ago on Benelux, the continental stepchild of Factory Records. So while New Order et. al. were taking over clubs worldwide, Antena were mostly, and criminally, overlooked. Yet, you listen to the coy cover of "The Boy From Ipanema" and, beyond sounding like it could have been recorded this year in a Williamsburg loft, you realize where bands like Stereolab got their groove. Antena is back with Tujours de Soleil, ostensibly a follow-up to Camino. "Spinner" is perfect for urban adventures, but unfortunately the only version I can find for download is only two-thirds the length of the original. Fortunately, Isabelle has a career-spanning catalog of MP3s on her site, so make a sampler and plan that trip to Paris sooner than you thought.

on POP'N CHERRIES (skynetblogs.be)

Indie-Twee-Chanson-Electro-Retro Minuscules instants et Majuscules douceurs

ANTENA

Though the guest list itself outnumbers the core trio at least six times, said trio -- in this incarnation Isabella Antena, Axailes Solar, and (in an amusing twist) Penelope Fasy, the daughter of original member Sylvain Fasy -- is in fine voice throughout, with all three taking turns on lead vocals (and thus keeping it from being an Isabella Antena album in all but name). Their blend of harmonizing provides often unexpected dividends, hearing the sudden but never startling additions to Isabella's own familiar tones on songs like the peppy "Caribbean Island" or, in a wonderfully left-field move, a near unrecognizable cover of America's "A Horse with No Name." The most dramatic change from the Camino del Sol days, perhaps unsurprisingly, comes in the arrangements -- instead of murky but winsomely captivating negotiations between post-punk melancholia and lighter pop roots, everything here is much more in keeping with Isabella's later and brighter blends of jazz, bossa nova, and gentle dance grooves. Often the latter stands a little more to the fore, though, adding an extra kick to tunes like "Blind Date" and "Love Is to Blame." In contrast, songs like the title track (with a beautiful fake-echo vocal break at several points) show the more traditional side to Antena very well. Meanwhile, Isabella Antena's most notable American supporters, the Thievery Corporation, help out with a bit of co-writing throughout -- besides the title track, there are the slinky but sharp beats of "Rendez-Vous Manque" as well as "Starlit Skies," written solely by Corporation member Rob Garza. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide

CAMINO DEL SOL/Brainwashed review

Antena, "Camio del Sol"
Written by Jon Whitney
Thursday, 04 May 2006
Antena was a French trio whose adoration for Brazilian samba/pop combined with a mastery of synths and guitars could easily be sited for the blueprint of Pizzicato Five or Stereolab, however, in 1982 the audience simply wasn't there. Numero Group issued this collection featuring their 1982 mini LP Camio del Sol in 2004, expanded to include tracks from other singles and compilations originally issued on Les Disques du Crépuscule, and now LTM, the primary label issuing the old Crépuscule and Factory Benelux catalogue has issued their own version boasting two more tunes.

Numero Group (US) / LTM (UK)

Antena was a female-fronted bright, fun, and sexy pop band. Their output was cocktail music for the swinging bachelor, which was completely the opposite from the dark, bleak, and frighteningly common suicidal crew of dudes in nearly everything that was associated with Factory was seemingly about at the time.

They varied production from the full, rich sounds of "Camino del Sol" and their cover/adaptation of "The Girl from Ipanema" (becoming "The Boy from Ipanema") to the minimal fare of guitar, hand percussions, and saxophone for the very Astrud Gilberto-influenced "Silly Things" and "Bye Bye Papaye." The sound has been well preserved and only a rare tune here or there sounds dated, and it's never painfully so. During the early 1980s, drum machines like the Roland 808 and 909 were so artificial sounding that they would always sound artificial, it's a much easier predicament than the late '80s drum machines which mimiced real drums (and poorly). Songs like "Unable" and "Frantz" are two with the most prominence of the 808 but Antena managed to program the drum machine originally enough to make it not sound like the rest of 1982's output.

Following the mini LP of Camino del Sol, Antena released a single, appeared on some compilations, but soon split. Singer Isabelle Powaga continued to record and release music as Isabelle Antena, keeping up the Brazilian lounge flavor, but not making nearly as notable works as what's collected on Camino del Sol. While I do enjoy this release, I'm not completely blown away like I have been with other Numero Group releases. With the amount of paper used to make the booklet, it would have been nice to see more story on the production of the music or the origins of the non-Camino material. It is nice to see the front and back covers for the mini LP and the "Boy from Ipanema" single but there is surely more in the vaults for this group.

ANTENA/TOUJOURS DU SOLEIL

Brand new album from the stylish French electro-bossa pioneers whose debut Camino Del Sol is now an acknowledged genre classic. Antena's groundbreaking mix of Kraftwerk, Suicide and the breezy tropicalia of the Gilberto family sounds as fresh in 2006 as in 1982, when John Foxx produced their debut single, The Boy From Ipanema, and future Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant tagged them 'electro-samba'. Echoes of the Antena sound can be heard in artists as diverse as Stereolab, Electralane and Thievery Corporation - indeed the latter duo co-wrote two of the thirteen songs on Toujours Du Soleil.
The Antena trio for 2006 consists of main songwriter Isabelle Antena together with daughter Penelope Fasy (replacing her father Sylvain) and hip Brussels dj Axailes Solar. Conceived as a sequel to Camino Del Sol, Toujours Du Soleil (Always The Sun) was recorded on the French Riviera - where else? - and produced by Dr Drak, Shape and The Cool Groove Sessions. Featuring a stellar cast of prestigious international guests, the 2006 Antena trip takes you from Paris to Tokyo, Goa to Washington CD. Stand-out tracks include energetic stepper Le Spinner (already familiar from the Samsonite ad campaign), future lounge classic Toujours Du Soleil and the electro-groovy Love Is To Blame, as well as a magical version of the laid-back America classic Horse With No Name.

ANTENA/Last FM Top Artist

13

Antena

Clim The Cliff/Madison Ave-Madison Area

Antena - Camino Del Sol

Another off-beat find from the outstanding Numbero Group...not going to be a connection for most folks here, arguably....but we love the spirit of this find and, for those open for new discoveries on the musical front, much of what the NumberoGroup does is just pure joy---from horrifically rare early 70`s soul, wildly rare power pop(Yellow Pills: Prefill) to his Jacques Brel-esque slice of a French pop find. From the label itself, the story of this p articular release: "This record almost didn`t happen. It was an accident. A cheap gamble. A $4.99 lottery ticket marked VG++. I knew nothing about "Camino Del Sol" when I saw it sitting misfiled in my local record shop`s "Psych/Garage" bin, but there was something about the elegant simplicity of its jacket that said "This record will probably get you laid." Thinking back, the record was probably tucked away on purpose by someone who forgot their wallet.

Upon first listen it was obvious that this wasn`t a garage record. Drum machines, synths and harpsichord do not a garage record make. Instead, I was treated to a lush mix of "Desafinado Plays" and "Autobahn" misted with a French pop sensibility. The 12" EP was flipped over and over throughout that weekend. Friends dropped by only to have to listen to me gush about Antena until they begged me to play it. They were forced to sit my sofa while I pontificated about it being the kind of music you listen to while playing cards." "The newly formed vinyl junkie reissue label, Numero, sniffed this truffle, and has released it between more traditional reissues of a rare soul compilation and a power-pop box set. Camino del Sol was originally a five-song twelve-inch from 1980, but was later expanded to a full-length by Crepuscule in 1982 with added singles. This reissue further expands the release with the "Seaside Weekend" single, two unreleased tracks ("Frantz" and "Ingenuous"), and new artwork. With any justice, it will bring new light to a lost gem, as similar reissues did for Os Mutantes, whose adolescent dementia influences this record`s tropicalia songs ("The Boy from Ipanema", "Sissexa"), and Shuggie Otis, whose piquantly primitive drum machines propel each track. So much hidden influence lies in these songs. The wonderful opening punch of "To Climb the Cliff" and the title track predate Stereolab`s Gainsbourg-gone-Kraftwerk by over a decade, and Air`s cool, Parisian sex by nearly two. Tortoise directly lifted the syncopated synthetic funk of "To Climb the Cliff" on their equally rare seven-inch, "Madison Ave/Madison Area"."-

I.ANTENA/ahead of her time

when it comes to women singing breathily down a microphone, their eyes closed and their body swaying to the gentle beats of the music, that French women somehow manage to do it so much better than everyone else??

Is it due to their inbuilt sexual magnetism which seeps its way into their music, seducing listeners on the way?

Das ebenfalls neuaufgelegte Nachfolge-Album, "Hoping for Love", ging dann übrigens wieder zurück in Richtung Chanson.

ANTENA/with BUSCEMI

Posted by orangeflower at 22:52 * Comments(8) * TrackBack(1) * MUSIC(Female:A-C)
Blog Top * Previous Entry * Next Entry

Trackback URL
http://app.blog.livedoor.jp/orangeflower/tb.cgi/29656130

Trackback
Antena【通勤音楽】at September 11, 2005 19:05

Comment
The route map of early 1980s indie pop is currently being rewritten on a daily basis and Antena merit a chapter of their own, complementing the similarly unearthed and now highly respected ESG. Isabelle Powaga, Sylvain Fasy and Pascale Moiroud formed Antena in 1981, and created a radical and intuitive fusuon of bossa nova, archaic samba-jazz and primitive Kraftwerkisms, so they signed with Belgian label Crepuscule. Opening track Camino Del Sol sets the mood and could almost be Stereolab, but is so skeletal that the only possible contemporary influence must have been Young Marble Giants. Antena laid the ground for Stereolab and Bebel Gilberto without even knowing it" (Kieron Tyler, 12/05)

ANTENA /TOUR reports

Antena to Tour Eastern U.S.

Matt Amis reports:
Isabelle Antena, leader of the ground-breaking and oft-overlooked new wave band Antena, has reemerged from the shadows and is heading out to tour the U.S. for the first time in 22 years, following the success of her group's recently reissued 1981 masterpiece Camino Del Sol.

The French-Belgian combo first blended electro-samba with psychedelia and Bossanova in 1980 with a five-song 12" (it was later expanded into a full length by Factory-Benelux in 1981); but the Chicago-based Numero Group stumbled across the the album and resuscitated it with a new single ("Seaside Weekend"), two unreleased tracks ("Frantz" and "Ingenuous"), and new artwork. Sadly, Antena's original lineup fell apart soon after the original release of Camino Del Sol, but frontwoman Isabelle Antena flirted with solo jazz-pop work, and this year she unveiled Easy Does It, a two-disc set of pure Bossanova and remixes, on LTM. The invaluable UK label also recently reissued her En Cavale and Hoping For Love albums, as well as Issy Does It, a 12" remix album.

The tour, which begins in May, will be a track-by-track replication of Camino Del Sol, peformed by Isabelle, some backing musicians, and a few guests. Antena's last American show was at New York's Danceteria with Sonic Youth in 1983. Follow with a nice Cymande bassline and a keyboard with a weird baroque drone, click go when the french-accented woman comes in and then goes “ooo- oh” mid-verse. “Ingenuous(2)” is about a suck-face soul sucker though she’s not aware, I think. “All die under the kisses.” She could be a succubus as long as they keep coming with those electro hand claps- sounds that are used in hip hop electro actually, not the black raincoat goth shit that gets around as electro these days. A word that Babelfish and online translation engines fail to process. Brel, unable to better describe his hometown, simply uttered, "When Brussels was Brussels, when Brussels... brusseled." Camden hipsters may be more familiar with Belgo, the Chalk Farm eatery where servers in monks' habits serve mussels, frites, and trappist ale in a cold, aluminum, industrial loft, than the Belgian stepsister of Factory Records, Factory Benelux, and its Brussels-based sister label Les Disques du Crepuscule. Though the label served as a continental dumping ground for the tour-support one-offs of major players-- like A Certain Ratio's inaugural "Shack Up" seven-inch, and later, New Order's "Touched by the Hand of God" and "Everything's Gone Green" singles-- it cultivated its own indigenous roster with groups like The Names, Minny Pops, and the massively overlooked Antena.

The Names waded in slowed Peter Hook bassline facsimiles and faux-Morrissey moaning on their Swimming LP. Minny Pops ventured into colder electro-Teutonic territory. Antena, however, macheted into theretofore (and heretofore) unexplored territory for post-punk-- namely the oddball psychedelic scene of South America. Recorded with echoing minimalism, Antena's major release, Camino del Sol, evokes dreaming, singing, charmingly off-the-mark sci-fi futurism, and the black-and-white nostalgia of Brel's Brussels. It's as beautifully outdated, yet strikingly mind-boggling and timeless, as the towering Atomium over the Expo '58 grounds.

The newly formed vinyl junkie reissue label, Numero, sniffed this truffle, and has released it between more traditional reissues of a rare soul compilation and a power-pop box set. With any justice, it will bring new light to a lost gem, as similar reissues did for Os Mutantes, whose adolescent dementia influences this record's tropicalia songs ("The Boy from Ipanema", "Sissexa"), and Shuggie Otis, whose piquantly primitive drum machines propel each track. So much hidden influence lies in these songs. The wonderful opening punch of "To Climb the Cliff" and the title track predate Stereolab's Gainsbourg-gone-Kraftwerk by over a decade, and Air's cool, Parisian sex by nearly two. Tortoise directly lifted the syncopated synthetic funk of "To Climb the Cliff" on their equally rare seven-inch, "Madison Ave/Madison Area".

Stuttering kick drums, icicle synths, and robotic bass jerks the listener through "Spiral Staircase" with better effect than a handful of contemporary NY revivalists. Limited to the use of the above ingredients and the occasional dry electric guitar, Antena relied on vast amounts of space for haunting texture. Each member sounds isolated in far corners of an airport hangar, allowing coke-bottle percussion, sound effects, and Isabelle Antena's detached, seductive voice to float. The more propulsive tracks are offset by opiated cocktail numbers like "Silly Things", "Bye Bye Papaye", and "Noelle A Hawaii". Yet, the faint echo of Antena's label cousins Joy Division keeps things perversely intoxicating. Only on "Les Demoiselles de Rochefort", a cover of Michel Legrand's theme to the Catherine Deneuve film, do Antena sound positively retro-minded. Even then, the strings and horns seemingly waft from a wormhole.

The band fell apart soon after this release, and carried on into goofy plastic jazz before Isabella turned it all into a solo vehicle. These days, Isabelle Antena still rides the stereotypical "Big in Japan" wave, touring the country and releasing smooth adult albums in some cruel approximation of Lost in Translation's Sausalito. Yet she'll always have this document of inspired originality in her past, which, with this reissue, could very well make her a rediscovered figure. As this album proves, she was much more akin to Beck and Björk than her dour trend-following contemporaries. So unique perhaps only Jacques Brel found the verb for it.

Brent DiCrescenzo March 12th, 2004

ANTENA/Rolling stone review

***A reissue of the best French-Belgian electro-samba record you've never heard. The other half seemed barely interested in the show, as if they'd wandered in randomly for a drink. (A bit like the guy in line at Mini-Mutek NYC who asked me if we were at the Lansky Lounge.) Since Antena's opening slots for Andrew Bird ended up being cancelled - disagreements with the organizers, apparently - those of us in the crowd ended up being the only people to see the band's first visit to NYC in over 20 years. Antena's music has always seemed overlooked though - Camino Del Sol, their signature album, came out on Factory's relatively unheralded Benelux imprint and has never gotten much attention. I certainly wouldn't have heard them if not for Other Music's glowing write-up of the Camino Del Sol reissue last year, but their bossanova/"electro-samba" sound is quite nice IMO.

Still, randoms aside, I was probably the most casual fan in attendance on Thursday. (It was just $5 and I enjoyed the album enough to say why not.) Antena was originally a three-piece fronted by Isabelle Antena, but I believe she was the only one of them on this tour. She sang and played guitar, backed by a woman on electronics and some very old school drum machines. Most of the music was sampled/prerecorded, though I was hoping otherwise, but it put all the focus on Isabelle's voice. Which was fantastic - rich, nuanced, perfect for a songstress. They played most (all?) of Camino Del Sol, with the highlights being the songs I liked most on the album - the title track and "To Climb The Cliff." She also played a few other tunes, including what I'm told was an America cover. All in all, it was a good show. Not the kind of gig to win you over or turn you off, but everyone there seemed pretty happy with it.

Posted by orangeflower at 22:52 * Comments(8) * TrackBack(1) * MUSIC(Female:A-C)
Blog Top * Previous Entry * Next Entry

Trackback URL
http://app.blog.livedoor.jp/orangeflower/tb.cgi/29656130

Trackback
Antena【通勤音楽】at September 11, 2005 19:05

Comment
This reissue consists of the mini LP of the same name, as well as the few singles and compilation cuts which preceded it (including the cover song, “The Boy From Ipenema”). The CDDB entry I got for it comes up as “Electro Samba.” Hmmm. Some references to that label in the liner notes suggest that this indeed what to call it. With its primitive drum machine-made latin rhythms and ethreal French/English female vocals, it sounds more to me like strung-out bossa nova playing in between album cuts at an Another Green World listening party. A few thousand to a hard-core group of people who really care about music.

"I don't think you can go into the record business [today] and think you're going to sell a million records," says Shipley, co-founder of the re-issue label the Numero Group, from his home base in Chicago, Illinois.

"The basis of our philosophy is to have loyal people [who seek out the brand]. That's more valuable than selling a million copies of one record."

So Shipley, a former A&R manager for funky-artsy (David Bowie, Frank Zappa, Bootsy Collins) label Rykodisc, is digging.

There are hundreds of records out there -- old singles and albums -- that have never gotten the proper attention, he believes. He's trying to give them an outlet.

He and his business partner, Tom Lunt, started Numero with that intent. So far, the company has released three CDs: "Eccentric Soul: The Capsoul Label," a compilation of soul music from a Columbus, Ohio, record company; "Camino Del Sol" by Antena, a reissue of a 1982 LP by an obscure French group; and "Eccentric Soul: The Bandit Label," a compilation of songs -- some of which were remastered from battered 45s and cassettes about to go to the city dump -- from a South Side Chicago label run out of what the liner notes call "a musical commune."

"We stumble into this stuff all the time," he says. Or is it French woman's sophisticated nature, which reflects itself in the tunes, or could it be the way that when a song is sung in French it sounds a million times better than in any other language?

Who knows? French women are one of the eternal mysteries of life, and singer Isabelle Antena is a lady who epitomises her kind to perfection. Her Best Of album 'L'Alphabet Du Plaisir' is a collection of the artist's work from 1982 to the present day.

For those of you who have never heard of her name before, Antena started out in a French jazz trio called Antena, before
going on to collaborate with artists such as Serge Gainsbourg, Henri Mancini (of Pink Panther theme tune fame) and other jazz greats. Her music is a mix of Brazilian jazz, funk and soul and the result is absolutely breathtaking. 'L'Alphabet Du Plaiser' is an album packed with 20 beautiful tracks full of energy, life and passion. A real treat to listen to!

author: Charlotte Otter

ANTENA/Tangents review
Devotion To Duty
Shop Around 20
Taking pride of place in my room at the moment are the four releases from the Numero Group. They are exquisite pop artefacts. The attention to detail is impressive. And I urge you all to indulge.

The Numero Group is a bespoke salvage operation, operating out of Chicago, and run by music obsessives Tom Lunt and Ken Shipley. Quite rightly they invest a lot of love into creating beautiful objects, with detailed booklets, loads of photos. And best of all consistently themed, generic packaging. Now I’m a real sucker for that sort of thing. You get it a lot with books like the Penguin Classics, or the Rebel Inc Classics series but it’s frustratingly rare with records. Though, in fairness, Ze, Impulse!, Kent, Blood and Fire, and Soul Jazz are honourable exceptions.

The Numero Group is running a wonderfully named Eccentric Soul series, focussing on lost local soul/funk labels from the ‘60s and ‘70s. So far the spotlight’s been on Capsoul from Columbus, Ohio, and Bandit from Chicago, and the music’s sensationally uplifting and in turn raises wonderful questions about just how much amazing music was produced by local independent soul/funk labels at this time. Quite simply if you like your old soul and funk stuff, you’ll love these sets.

My own favourite Numero release is the salvaged set of Camino Del Sol by Antena, with lots of lovely extras. Think Astrid Gilberto and Tom Jobim doing Suicide’s Be Bop Kid or Cheree, throw in Francoise Hardy and the Marine Girls, and you will be in the area covered by these young French explorers at the start of the ‘80s. These frail sounds are utterly heartwarming and deliciously danceable. Originally released on the excellent Crepescule label, it all ties into a great story about the adventuresomeness beyond punk on the European mainland think of LiliPUT, Malaria!, Marine for starters.

Antena’s story like so many others of the time is a tragic tale of false starts and unrealised potential, nonchalance and a blatant disregard for the rules of the game. I loved their 'Be Pop single madly, and it was almost a manifesto for years. It thankfully has been salvaged by our old friends at LTM, as part of their series of Isabel Antena reissues. These are well worth investigating after indulging in the glories of Camino Del Sol, though the first En Cavale is very much of its time. With the ubiquitous Camelle Hinds on bass, Danny Cummings on percussion, and Martin Hayles (of Orange Juice fame) at the controls, it’s pleasantly funky, lightly latin-esque new pop. The 1987 follow-up Hoping For Love is more jazzy, and all the better for it.

ANTENA/indie pop Italy

Discografia:

• Camino del sol (Les Disques du Crépuscule, EP 1982, LP/CD 1988, Numero Group, 2004)

Sito Ufficiale Numero Group:
www.numerogroup.com/numero.html

Camino Del Sol
(Numero Group, 2004)

"this record almost didn't happened. It was an accident. A cheap gamble"
"before there was Air or Stereolab, there were three french kids running around streets of Brusells making a record that no one wanted to hear"

Fabio

ANTENA/norway review

1. Mest kjent er de for den horror-monotone casiocoveren av Stan Getz sin nutrasweetklassiker ”The girl from Ipanema". Selvsagt heter den ”The boy from Ipanema”. Selvsagt.

And some things that should not have been forgotten...were lost.
History became legend...legend became myth...

Jada, mythos meg her, og mythos meg der. Camino del Sol collects every single and the lone EP of the same title that they would produce. Few heard them in the early '80s when they were around, partially because they were stuck in the wasteland of Factory Benelux, the Belgian little brother of the main Factory operation in Manchester that never had the sway of its elder. It probably didn't help that Young Marble Giants spinoff group Weekend and labelmates A Certain Ratio were plying a similar fusion of Latin rhythms and pop song structure, although neither produced an end result as intimate or insular as that of Antena. Isabella Antena's chanteuse-whisper vocals provide one of the clues to the group's uniqueness, as do the pencil-thin synth lines and genteel bossa nova drum machine patterns -- both of which sound out of place among their contemporaries, with the exception of John Foxx, but have a revelatory quality in light of groups that have come since; think Smokey & Miho, Adult., Kahimi Karie, Arto Lindsay, even Beck. Added to the wonder of this rediscovery are great liner notes and a respectable package that harks back to Factory's heyday. ~ Wade Kergan, All Music Guide

album credits

Giles Martin
Engineer

Ken Shipley
Liner Notes, Reissue Producer, A&R

Benoit Hennebert
Photography, Cover Design

Frank Brinkhuis
Liner Notes

Antena
Producer

John Foxx
Producer

Gareth Jones
Engineer

ANTENA/Gullbuy review

Its funny writing this review in Boston on a typically rainy day. I imagine the weather was like this when Antena's mini-album Camino del sol was recorded -- with the heavens opening up on Brussels. Antena was Isabelle Powaga, Sylvain Fasy and Pascale Moiroud, three friends from the South of France who finally found a home for their music on the independent Belgian label Les Disques du Crepuscule. Amidst the very old European buildings and typical grey weather, they dreamt of sunshine.

I know its a bit cliche to say this but, listening to the album again, it strikes me as how timeless it is, the musical references are obvious but skewed in just the right way, to make it sound innovative. This disc transports you to a warmer climate through its Brazilian roots. Its as if they wanted to craft their own versions of Tom Jobim songs (they go so far as to create their own cover with The Boy from Ipanema).

Neil Tennant, later of Pet Shop Boys fame, coined the term electro-samba while reviewing Antena for Smash Hits in 1982. Electro-samba it is. I love the production on this record -- it is rather sparse which complements the drum machine and vocal effects well. The songs are sung in French and English, lending the album an international feel as a whole. Europeans in Hot Weather. Numero Group's CD collects the entire output of Antena, the mini-album and singles, and re-arranges the tracks on this disc. Its hard not to love this disc, Antena took such care in writing songs, this is perhaps why there are so few of them, each is like sunkissed tropical cocktail, sweet and precious. They toured extensively in Europe with Tuxedomoon, 23 Skidoo, The Pale Fountains and Cabaret Voltaire. After that they were gone, the band expanded and Isabelle took over the musical direction of the group. It was re-named 'Isabelle Antena'. But that's another story.

Its hard for me to pick favorites on a release such as this. So I'll start with the beginning, Noelle a Hawaii, was my introduction to Antena, its their 'Christmas' song, which came out on Les Disques du Crepuscule's Christmas compilation Ghosts of Christmas Past, I love its vocals, where each girl seems to complete the other's sentence-- it also contains the line 'noel au crepuscule' (Christmas at Twilight). Then Camino del Sol, which has to be the ultimate humid holiday song, its full of sea, sex, and sun. Camino del Sol was also included on (the German label) Crippled Dick Hot Wax's compilation of erotic pop songs Chansons des Perverts. It is an elegant, lush, vibrant track that conjures up memories of an escape to the perfect sunny destination.

Last, but not least, their cover of the Michel Legrand classic Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (the song they cover is originally titled Chanson des Jumelles). This track is from French director Jacques Demy's 1967 film Les Demoiselles de Rochefort and was originally sung by Catherine Deneuve and her sister, Françoise Dorléac. The original track is admittedly, a bit more jazzy and produced, while Antena's version is a bit more spare in its production but every bit as cheerful and fun.

I love, I love, I love Antena. This CD should turn on a whole new audience to their happy sounds.

Although it's called Camino Del Sol (the title of their 5-song mini-lp debut), this cd includes lots of other material (compilation tracks and the like) as well as an additional three bonus tracks, swelling the total song count to fourteen swoonsome delights!
Back in the day, when he first heard Antena's breezy Brazillian tropicalia styled tunes crafted with unexpected instrumentation (early puttering drum machines and analog synthesizers), former British music journalist / Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant tagged them 'electro-samba'. And the label suits them well, they even do a spaced-out, jazzy version of "Girl From Ipanema" (renamed "Boy From Ipanema" and produced by John Foxx). Imagine if seminal electro-punk duo Suicide were suddenly magically transformed into a light, airy female-sung group, and you'd have a pretty accurate picture of Antena's sound. Blending genres and instrumentations way ahead of the pack, the stylish trio can easily be seen as a French precursor to such groups as Stereolab. You can also hear where young Brit upstarts Electrelane probably got ample birdlike vocal inspiration on the song "To Climb The Cliff". Fans of the Gilberto family (Joao, Astrud and Bebel) will surely also want to check out Antena too. Really, this album sounds perfectly fresh today.
MPEG Stream: "Camino Del Sol"
MPEG Stream: "The Boy From Ipanema"

Antena-turn table lab review

To Climb The Cliff 7"
Antena

The Camino del Sol album isn’t available on wax, but at least we get these two great songs from the French electro-Brazilian trio on the label with the name that could be synonymous with gloaming or something dusk-related. “To Climb A Cliff(1)” starts with some clinky glasses in a restaurant and a piano in the background that could be a band or a record. This election thing is really fucking up the happy-go-lucky nature of my reviews. –Dave Tompkins

antena-limited addition review

ANTENA - "To Climb The Cliff" b/w "Ingenuous" 45
In 1981 three young Parisian's took their love for 70's synth pioneers Kraftwerk, Faust and Neu and combined it with a passion for 60's Brazillian icons Antonio Carlos Jobim, Caetano Veloso, and Joao & Astrud Gilberto. Before groups like Stereolab, Air, and the Pizzicato Five would make multi ethnic electronic music, there was Antena and their album "Camino Del Sol", a landmark venture of french pop, bossa nova and electronic styles that laid the groundwork for the electro-samba movement that artist like Bebel Gilberto, Si*Se`, Moreno Veloso, Los Aterciopelados, Arto Lindsay and others would popularize almost two decades later.

In late 2001 I was digging through the international bins at Reckless in Chicago and stumbled upon "Camino Del Sol." It was the kind of record you bought just because the cover looked so incredibly cool. Several hours later I had played the record three times, flipping from A to B back to A. The record didn't leave my turntable for close to two weeks.

After several months of research I found the owners of the master tapes. They agreed to let me reissue the album's best track "To Climb The Cliff" as well as opened up their vault of unreleased material where I found "Ingenuous." This record is limited to 300 copies on black vinyl.
